Frequently asked questions
Where is my data stored?
Driving Hours Tracker stores its authoritative active-drive and logbook data locally on your iPhone.
Eligible finished data can synchronize through your private Apple CloudKit database when iCloud is available. This can include exact private routes. Driving Hours Tracker does not operate a separate learner-data server or a shared family logbook.
RevenueCat processes only the anonymous purchase and entitlement information needed for Full Access. Learner names, permit references, drives, routes, locations, goals, cars, Notes, PDFs, and the free-drive allowance are not sent to RevenueCat.
Is iCloud synchronization immediate?
No. CloudKit synchronization is managed by Apple and is asynchronous.
Changes normally synchronize automatically, but they may be delayed by the network, iCloud capacity, Apple Account state, device state, or Apple service conditions. Use Settings → Device and Data → Sync Now or Retry iCloud Sync to request another synchronization attempt.
An active drive remains local to the iPhone that started it. It cannot be viewed as controllable or finished from another iPhone.
Can I use the app without iCloud?
Yes. Locally authorized Start, Active Drive, Finish, review, History, settings changes, deletion, and local PDF creation use locally available data and do not depend on iCloud.
Without iCloud, data does not synchronize to another iPhone. If the app or device is lost before data synchronizes, that data may be unrecoverable.
Why is my route partial, reduced in accuracy, or unavailable?
Route capture depends on location permission, GPS conditions, iOS background execution, the device, and the environment.
- Partial means part of the route was not captured.
- Reduced Accuracy means captured samples had a material accuracy limitation.
- Unavailable means there was not enough usable route evidence.
Partial and Reduced Accuracy can appear together. Driving Hours Tracker preserves captured evidence and does not draw a substantial missing section as verified travel.
Will a location problem stop the timer?
No. Timer validity does not depend on location.
If location is denied, revoked, interrupted, or unavailable, elapsed-time recording and Finish can still work. Route, Estimated Distance, endpoints, or Night Estimate may be limited, unavailable, or Unclassified.
What is Estimated Distance?
Estimated Distance is calculated after Finish from accepted consecutive location samples within continuous captured route segments.
It is not an odometer reading or verified travel distance. The app does not fill a substantial GPS gap, use a straight line between Start and Finish, or use an Apple Maps planned route.
You can choose Miles or Kilometers in Settings. Changing the unit reformats the same stored canonical distance and future PDFs; it does not change the drive.
What is Night Estimate?
Night Estimate is a best-effort astronomical classification based on recorded time, available location, and time-zone evidence.
Time that cannot be classified reliably is shown as Unclassified. The result is not a legal-night-hours determination and may not match licensing requirements where you live.
What should I do if the app closes during a drive?
Reopen Driving Hours Tracker on the same iPhone. When the local record survives, the app restores the durable active drive and reconstructs elapsed time.
Location capture may contain a disclosed gap. The app does not guess a Finish time. Finish the drive when safe, then review or delete it if the recorded timing is not suitable.
What happens if I forget to Start or Finish?
A drive cannot be created retrospectively. If you forgot to Start, the app cannot add the missing drive.
If you forgot to Finish, the active timer continues until you explicitly Finish. Review the resulting record and delete the whole drive if it is not suitable. Recorded Start, Finish, duration, route, Estimated Distance, Night Estimate, and captured car cannot be edited.
Can I edit a drive?
While a finished drive is Needs Review, you can edit Weather, Roads, Skills, and Notes.
Confirm Details changes it to Reviewed and permanently locks those descriptive fields. Recorded Start, Finish, duration, route, Estimated Distance, Night Estimate, and captured car are always immutable. If an immutable or Reviewed value is unacceptable, delete the whole drive and record a new one when appropriate.
Can I add earlier drives or import another logbook?
No. Driving Hours Tracker records only drives created through Start and Finish in this app.
It does not support manual drives, prior-hour balances, CSV import, PDF import, another-app import, or backup-file import. The PDF is a shareable snapshot, not an app backup.
Can I record on more than one iPhone?
Yes. Each iPhone can have its own local active drive, including while offline.
Finished drives can later synchronize through private iCloud. Different drive identifiers remain separate even if their times overlap. The app does not merge routes or timers automatically.
Does Family Sharing share my logbook?
No. Eligible Apple Family Sharing can provide Full Access only.
It does not share or combine learner names, permit references, drives, routes, cars, goals, PDFs, or the free-drive allowance. Private iCloud data remains tied to the relevant learner Apple Account data scope.
How does the one free drive work?
A new learner data scope begins with one free-drive allowance.
Only a successfully saved Start that uses the free tier consumes it. A failed Start does not consume it. A Start made with active paid, trial, or Family-shared Full Access leaves the allowance unchanged.
Deleting the free drive, deleting the app, or erasing the logbook does not provide another free drive.
How do I restore Full Access?
Open Settings → Access → Restore Purchases.
Use the App Store account associated with the original purchase or eligible Apple Family Sharing access. A successful Restore activates Full Access but does not automatically start a drive.
If the app cannot verify an earlier purchase after a fresh installation, connect to the internet and try Restore Purchases again.
How do I manage or cancel a subscription?
Open Settings → Access → Manage Subscription in Driving Hours Tracker.
The app opens Apple’s subscription-management interface.
You can also follow Apple’s instructions at If you want to cancel a subscription from Apple.
Deleting Driving Hours Tracker does not cancel a subscription.
How do I request a refund?
Apple processes App Store payments and refund requests.
Visit reportaproblem.apple.com and follow Apple’s instructions. Driving Hours Tracker support cannot directly approve an App Store refund.
What happens when Full Access expires?
An active drive is not interrupted. Finish, finalization, review, saved History, routes, estimates, goals, iCloud, PDFs, deletion, and Settings remain available.
Only a later Start may require an unused free drive or renewed Full Access. Turning off auto-renew keeps access until the current Apple-provided expiry date.
How do I delete one drive?
Open History or Drive Detail and choose Delete Drive.
After confirmation, the drive, exact route, and derived results are removed from the current logbook and synchronization deletion is scheduled. There is no app-provided undo or Recently Deleted area.
Deleting a drive never restores a used free-drive allowance. A previously shared PDF cannot be recalled.
How do I erase the whole logbook?
Open Settings → Erase Logbook Data and Start Over.
The action removes the current learner logbook locally and from private iCloud where possible. It is unavailable while a drive is Recording or Finalizing.
Erase Logbook Data does not cancel or refund a subscription, change Full Access, or restore a used free drive. Previously shared PDFs remain outside the app’s control.
What happens if I delete the app?
Deleting Driving Hours Tracker normally removes its local app container. Unsynchronized information, including an active drive, may be unrecoverable.
Deleting the app does not automatically:
- remove data already stored in private iCloud;
- cancel an App Store subscription;
- delete purchase records held by Apple or RevenueCat;
- restore a used free drive; or
- recall a shared PDF.
How do I create and share a PDF?
Open Settings → Device and Data → Create PDF Practice Record. Choose all available drives or a date range, then generate and preview the PDF before sharing it through the iOS share sheet.
The PDF is created locally. It can include learner-entered information, totals, drive details, Estimated Distance, Night Estimate, quality disclosures, and privacy-reduced endpoints. It never includes exact coordinates, street addresses, route geometry, route thumbnails, or route links.
After you save or share a PDF, that copy is outside the app’s control and cannot be recalled.
What does CarPlay support?
On a compatible vehicle with the required Apple capability, CarPlay provides a deliberately limited interface.
It can show the Selected Car and an eligible Start Drive or clearly identified Start Free Drive action while idle. During Recording it shows elapsed time and Finish. It does not include a paywall, prices, trials, purchase controls, route inspection, navigation, metadata editing, or Pause.
A CarPlay Start never triggers a location-permission prompt on the vehicle display. Disconnecting CarPlay does not stop an active drive.
What do the widget and Live Activity store?
The widget uses a compact local projection for setup or access state, learner name, Selected Car, total time, goal progress, and active-drive status where appropriate.
The Live Activity uses a random drive identifier, captured car name, and Start time to show Recording and elapsed time.
Neither receives the exact route. A Live Activity is a status projection, not the authoritative drive record, and does not provide Finish.
Does Apple Maps record my destination in Driving Hours Tracker?
No. Driving Hours Tracker can open Apple Maps after Start, but it does not save the destination, import the planned route, or treat Apple Maps navigation as recorded evidence.
The app’s private route is based only on the location samples that Driving Hours Tracker itself captured.
Does Driving Hours Tracker track me?
Driving Hours Tracker uses location only for the private drive-recording features described in the app and its Privacy Policy.
The app does not contain advertising, request App Tracking Transparency permission, access IDFA, perform cross-app tracking, or send learner and drive information to a custom analytics service.
RevenueCat processes the anonymous purchase and entitlement information required for subscriptions. Apple may process iCloud, App Store, Maps, system-surface, and diagnostic information under your Apple settings and Apple’s policies.
See the Driving Hours Tracker Privacy Policy for details.
